Four chairs · north verge

A cut that still holds its shape in week five.

We work slow on the first visit — consultation, dry finish, and a plan for how it grows out. Every cut below lists its length, its price and who it actually suits.

Four ways to sit down

Each chair runs a different clock. Pick by how much shape you want changed, not by the name — and if you are between two, say so on the request form and we will book the longer one.

01

The Verge Cut

45 minutes£32Clipper & scissor

Our standard full cut. Ten minutes of consultation and a look at your growth pattern, then a clipper taper blended into scissor work on top, finished dry so you see the real weight of it.

Best if you want a clean outline you can live in for four to six weeks.

Straight razor, comb and barbering tools laid out on a counter
02

Hot Towel Shave

40 minutes£34Straight razor

Two towels, a pre-shave oil, and two passes with the grain before anything goes against it. We stop at one pass on skin that reacts, and finish with an unscented balm rather than anything astringent.

Best before an occasion, or if shaving at home has started to irritate your neck.

03

Upkeep & Outline

20 minutes£18Between visits

Neck, ears and edges tidied without touching the length on top. Meant as a mid-cycle visit so a longer shape keeps its line instead of being cut short to fix the outline.

Best two or three weeks after a full cut, or the morning of something that matters.

04

Beard Shape & Cut

70 minutes£46Cut plus beard

A full cut and a beard worked as one shape — cheek line set to your jaw rather than a template, length graded toward the chin, and the moustache cut clear of the lip while you are sat upright.

Best if your cut and beard are currently fighting each other for the same line.

From the floor

How the shop runs

Brass Verge has four chairs and one rule: nobody gets rushed into a shape they did not ask for. We talk first, cut dry at the end, and tell you plainly when a style will not hold on your hair.

Consultation is part of the booked time, not an extra. If a photo you bring in needs a different density or growth pattern than you have, we will say so and offer the nearest cut that will actually sit the way you want.

We stock a short shelf of products and recommend them rarely. If water and a comb will do it, that is what we will tell you at the mirror.

A good cut should look deliberate the morning you have no time to style it. Ivor Mead, head barber

Six things worth asking

The questions that come up most often at the mirror, answered the way we would answer them in the chair.

I am growing my hair out. Should I still come in?

Yes, roughly every six weeks, but ask for Upkeep & Outline rather than a full cut. Growing out fails when the sides catch up with the top; taking weight out of the sides and leaving the length alone keeps the shape moving in the right direction. Tell us the length you are aiming for and we will work backwards from it.

Should I bring a photo?

Bring two or three if you have them, ideally of hair with a similar thickness and wave to yours. Photos are useful for showing us the shape you like and the length you are comfortable with. They are less useful as a target to match exactly — we will tell you which parts of a reference will translate to your hair and which will not.

My hairline is thinning. What actually helps?

Shorter on the sides than you think, and less length on top than you think. Contrast between a dense side and a thinner top reads as thinning; closing that gap reads as a deliberate cut. We will also keep the front line soft rather than drawing a hard edge, because a sharp outline makes a receding corner more obvious, not less.

Do you cut children's hair?

From about five years old, booked into the twenty-minute slot and best in a quiet midweek morning. We do not use a cape with a child who does not want one, and we will stop a cut early rather than finish it over a protest. If it is a first-ever haircut, say so on the form so we leave extra time.

My scalp or skin reacts badly. Can you work around it?

Usually, yes — tell us on the request form. We can skip the hot towel, drop to a single razor pass, use unscented balm, work with a comb guard rather than the blade against the skin, and avoid the neck entirely if that is where it flares. Nothing on the shelf gets used on you without being named first.

What happens if I need to cancel or I run late?

Reply to your confirmation as early as you can and we will move you to the next suitable chair at no cost. Arriving more than fifteen minutes late usually means we switch you to a shorter service that fits the remaining time, because the chair after yours is somebody else's booked slot.

Tell us the cut and the window

Send this across and we will reply with the chairs that fit, usually the same working day. Nothing is held until you have that reply.

  • Pick the cut you think you want — we will suggest a different one if the notes point elsewhere.
  • Give us a window rather than a single time; it almost always gets you in sooner.
  • First visit, a photo reference, or anything sensitive about skin or scalp belongs in the notes.
